THE BIG IDEA

Young people don’t wait to make a difference.

Interact is Rotary International’s service club for students ages 12–18. Sponsored by local Rotary clubs and supported by schools, Interact clubs give students the chance to take action on the issues they care about — from food insecurity and literacy to mental health, the environment, and international service.

Across District 5330, Interact clubs at middle schools and high schools throughout Riverside and San Bernardino Counties are doing the work. Real projects. Real leadership. Real impact.

THE PROGRAM

What is Interact?

Interact is one of Rotary’s most active youth programs, with more than 342,953 members in 145 countries. Each Interact club is sponsored by a Rotary club — a partnership that connects students to mentors, project funding, and a global network of young leaders.

Every year, Interact clubs are required to complete at least two service projects: one that helps their school or community, and one that promotes international understanding. The clubs decide what to do, plan it, and carry it out themselves.

“They leave with the conviction that they can make things better.”

THE IMPACT

Why Interact matters

High school is when students start figuring out who they are and what they care about. Interact gives them a place to channel that into action — to lead a project, organize a team, and see their work change something real.

Interactors gain skills colleges and employers look for: leadership, project management, public speaking, teamwork, and a sense of civic responsibility.

What students do

Interact clubs run themselves. Students elect officers, set the agenda, choose the causes, and lead the work.

Lead

Run the club

Students serve as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer — gaining real experience running an organization.

Plan

Choose the projects

Each club decides what matters most in their school and community, then builds a project plan from the ground up.

Serve

Complete two projects a year

One project that helps the local community, and one that builds international understanding — minimum.

Connect

Meet other Interactors

The District 5330 Interact Awards bring clubs from across the district together to celebrate, learn, and meet other student leaders.

Grow

Build the skills

Public speaking, fundraising, event planning, working across difference — the real-world skills that come from doing the work.

Next

Opportunity to attend PRYDE or RYLA and become a future Rotarian

Interact is one of the best pathways into PRYDE and RYLA camps and then to become a lifelong Rotarian.

Project ideas

A few of the kinds of projects Interact clubs across District 5330 have taken on.

  • Food drives and meal-packing events for local shelters
  • Mental health awareness campaigns on campus
  • Beach, park, and trail clean-ups
  • Backpack and school-supply drives
  • Holiday gift programs for kids in need
  • Hygiene kits for unhoused neighbors
  • Tutoring and reading buddies with younger students
  • Fundraising for ShelterBox, polio eradication, and other global causes
  • Cards and care packages for veterans and seniors
  • Environmental and recycling initiatives
  • Partnering with EarlyAct clubs at feeder schools
  • International pen pal and cultural exchange projects

“Interact is where young people stop waiting for someone else to fix it — and start leading the change themselves.”

District 5330 Interact Awards — 2024-25

Clubs from across the district come together.

Interactors from middle schools and high schools across District 5330 gather at Galway Downs to be recognized for their projects, meet other clubs, and celebrate a year of service.

Celebrate Interact’s global impact

Four Rotary International moments your club can plug into each year — chances to connect with Interactors around the world.

Annual

World Interact Week

A week each November (around Rotary’s birthday) when Interact clubs worldwide celebrate together and showcase their service.

Storytelling

Interact Video Awards

A global Rotary competition that recognizes Interact clubs telling their service story on video.

Each November

Rotary Youth Day at the United Nations

Interactors and Rotaractors are invited to UN headquarters in New York for Rotary Day at the UN — a global youth-leadership gathering.

Each spring

Global Youth Service Day

The world’s largest celebration of young people changing their communities — Interactors take action together each spring.

The Rotary Youth Service Pathway

Interact connects students to a lifelong network.

Interact is just one of many ways for students to get connected — Interactors often go on to attend PRYDE and RYLA, lead Rotaract clubs in college, and many become Rotarians.

Start a club

Start an Interact Club in 7 Easy Steps

Seven steps from idea to chartered club. There’s no fee and no deadline — you can begin at any point in the year.

  1. Find a sponsoring Rotary club

Every Interact club is sponsored by a local Rotary club — it provides adult advisors, project funding, and a link to the wider Rotary network. Not sure who’s nearby? Search the club directory above or our Find a Club map.

  2. Line up a school advisor

Find a teacher, counselor, or staff member willing to host the club on campus, sit in on meetings, and sign off with the school administration.

  3. Recruit your students

Rotary requires a minimum of 5 students to charter — but 15 or more makes for a club that can sustain real projects without burning anyone out.

  4. Elect officers

Have your members choose a president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. The student board runs the meetings and makes the decisions.

  5. Adopt the constitution & bylaws

Download the standard Interact constitution and recommended bylaws (in Forms & resources below) and adopt them with your members.

  6. Submit Certification Form

Send to the District Interact Chair for District Governor Approval and Rotary International Registration. Good news! There’s no fee to charter an Interact club, and clubs can be chartered year-round.

  7. Plan your first two projects

Every Interact club completes at least two service projects a year: one that helps the local community, and one that builds international understanding. Pick your causes and get to work.

The role of the sponsoring Rotary club

Every Interact club is sponsored by a Rotary club. That sponsorship is the engine that makes the club work.

  • Provide adult Rotarian advisors who attend meetings and coach the student board
  • Help connect projects to community partners and resources
  • Fund or co-fund Interact service projects
  • Sponsor students to attend the District 5330 Interact Awards, RYLA, and other events
  • Make sure the school administration knows the club has Rotary’s backing

What makes a strong Interact club

Chartering is just the start. The strongest Interact clubs — the ones that run real projects year after year — share a few common ingredients.

  • A passionate school staff advisor (often a teacher or counselor)
  • Active Rotarian advisors from the sponsoring club
  • A student board that meets weekly and makes the decisions
  • At least two service projects each year (local + international)
  • A connection to RYLA, the 4-Way Test Speech Contest, and the District 5330 Interact Awards
