THE BIG IDEA

Service can start at any age.

EarlyAct introduces elementary students to the heart of Rotary: service, leadership, kindness, and community. Through school-based service clubs, students learn early that they are never too young to make a difference.

WHAT IS EARLYACT?

EarlyAct is a Rotary-sponsored service club for elementary-age students — a school-wide club where 5- to 11-year-olds practice leadership, build character, and serve their school and community.

EarlyAct clubs are sponsored by a local Rotary club and supported by school staff and Rotarian advisors. The program builds the foundation for future participation in Interact, RYLA, Rotaract, and Rotary itself.

WHY IT MATTERS

EarlyAct teaches students that service is not something they have to wait until they are older to do. Through age-appropriate projects they discover empathy, responsibility, teamwork, and the joy of helping others.

It connects directly to Rotary’s commitment to developing the next generation of leaders — people who serve their schools, their neighbours, and ultimately, the world.

The Mission of EarlyAct

“To promote goodwill, understanding, and peace through the active participation of its student members so that with committed citizenship and effective leadership they may improve the quality of life of their school, local, and global communities.”

How an EarlyAct club works

Meetings & structure

EarlyAct clubs run themselves — with adult support — through regular meetings led by student officers.

  • Meetings held about twice a month, 30–45 minutes each
  • Run by EarlyAct student officers using parliamentary procedure
  • Guided by attending faculty and Rotarian advisors
  • Students identify real-life problems and build solutions together
  • All projects are chosen and managed by the students themselves

How to start an EarlyAct club

Two paths in — both work the same way and end with a Rotary–school partnership.

  • A Rotary club contacts the school principal or teacher to explain the program
  • Or a school contacts a local Rotary club and asks for sponsorship
  • Designate a school staff advisor and a Rotarian advisor
  • Recruit elementary students and elect officers
  • Hold first meeting and pick a first service project

What EarlyAct students do

Six ways EarlyAct students grow into confident young leaders through hands-on experience.

Plan

School service projects

Students plan and lead projects that benefit their school community — from campus clean-ups to kindness campaigns.

Serve

Local community needs

From food drives to cards for seniors, students support real local needs and learn how their actions make a difference.

Practice

Kindness and citizenship

Students learn empathy, responsibility, and what it means to be a good citizen at school and beyond.

Learn

Service Above Self

EarlyAct students learn Rotary’s motto and discover how serving others builds stronger communities.

Build

Teamwork & confidence

Students work together, take on real roles, and develop confidence as young leaders in their school.

Connect

With Rotarians & student leaders

EarlyAct students meet local Rotarians and older student leaders who model what service looks like.

An example from across the District

EarlyAct clubs make their own schools better through hands-on, student-led service. One example from our District: the Mission Bell Elementary EarlyAct Club set out to keep their campus clean. Students decorated bright Rotary recycling and trash cans with superhero themes and upbeat messages — “Keep our campus clean,” “Pick up trash — be super-tastic!” — then placed them around the school, turning a simple idea into a shared habit of caring for their space. Any club in District 5330 can spark a project like this one.

The Rotary Youth Service Pathway

EarlyAct is often a student’s first step into Rotary.

Students grow from young service-minded learners into confident leaders who continue serving their schools, communities, and the world.

FOR ROTARY CLUBS

The role of the sponsoring Rotary club. A sponsoring Rotary club partners with the school to:

  • Guide and encourage student leaders
  • Help students choose meaningful service projects
  • Connect students to Rotary’s larger mission
  • Celebrate student leadership and service
  • Create chances for students to see service in action
FOR SCHOOLS

Who can start an EarlyAct club? Any school can, in partnership with a local Rotary club. The strongest clubs usually have:

  • A school staff advisor
  • A sponsoring Rotary club
  • Student leadership roles
  • Regular meetings
  • Age-appropriate service projects
  • A clear focus on kindness, character & community
